  She clacked her tongue. This was the eighth time those two were going at eachother again. On one side white plating protecting everything under the waist, a bare chest, a fair face almost as if never touched by war, but the back of the head forever mangled by the implants to mirror the broken state of his genefather. On the other yellow leg armour, with a black eagle head surrounded by bolts of lightning decorating the kneepad, a bare chest and a face that once might have been beautiful untill war and gene enhancement had only left one beautiful feature, those stunning bright blue eyes.
  She brushed her dark brown hair from her face and off her shoulder, the rank marking on her shoulder denoting her as a high ranking tactical officer. She watched as the host warrior, whos axe was attached to his arm by a heavy chain wrapped around his limb, charged in towards the guest warrior, a swordsman of reknown who had the reputation of one of the best swordsmen in the Imperium. They always went to third blood. The fight was over before her own eyes registered it, such is the might of the noble Astartes. Both warriors stood bloodied, but it looked like finally the bout was to the axeman, breaking the swordsman´s seven round winning streak. Funny. Seven, just like the number of his Legion.
  Twelve months would he be a guest aboard the Conqueror. Another coincidence. Twelve months with the XII Legion before heading back to Terra. He had been here for almost three months now and had taken up many customs of the warriors he spent time with, sometimes even matching their hot headedness without the implants.
  The vox crackled and she was needed on the bridge. She turned only to have the doors slide open before her to see the lumbering form of a demi-god in gladiatorial brass, two axes as big as herself on his sides. She had began to learn not to bow in his presence as that would only beget mockery. "Lord Angron". A simple grunt in return. Well it was better than nothing or any sensible speech.
  Duty came and she did not expect a promotion to captain. Then again the old captain did have an accident a week earlier, she just didnt think she would get promoted, maybe that is why Angron somewhat tolerated her earlier. She retreated to her new quarters with a stack of paperwork and dataslates to process. A day of suprises it seemed as in her quarters she would find Khârn, coming to give her his personal congratulations.
  "I think that makes you the youngest flagship captain. Congratulations Lotara."
  "Thank you Centurion."
  "You won from Sigismund today didnt you?"
  "He is a formidable warrior."
  "So why did you come here? Because I dont beleive you came here just to congratulate me and I have a stack of work that I need to chew through. Im already getting a headache thinking about it"
  Kharn let out a soft chuckle "Dont talk to me about headaches Lotara. And yes thats also why I came here for. I was wondering if you still had that...".
  A smile painted the new shipmistresses face as she grabbed two small sacks of ground herbs and dipped them in hot water. She handed the Astartes a cup which looked hillariously small in his fingers. Despite the usual hot headedness and the resilience of the great augmented warrior, he displayed a certain patience as he sipped from the drink. A rare thing.
  They spent some more time together, both mortal and superhuman being taking turns relieving some stress from the other. Both shared some information with one another that would benefit them and the chrono ticked on unnoticed...
  
  They would both be busy for a while. One waging war on the ground, the other in the void.
  No one dared to mention it once she got her honourable distinction. Who in their right mind would call the shipmistress of the flagship of the Legion most notorious for their brutal combat a little pudgy, especially when her honourable mark came from the hand of a Centurion in said Legion, authorised by said Legions Primarch?
  It went by fairly unspoken of, like a dirty secret. Luckily all Imperial Remembrancers were tossed off the ship at her first sign of discomfort. And maybe in retrospect doubly well that that happened...
  
  Sigismund was to be dropped off at Terra. He had sparred with Angron the day before his departure and learned many things (and got some insults as an extra of course). He had bound chains to his arm like his Oath Brother. And with him he carried the biggest secret to leave the Conqeuror.
  He placed it in the hands of the Custodes. Who in turn presented it to the Sigilite, who ordered to have it never to be spoken of and for it to serve the Imperium with all the potential it could bring.
  And it did.
  In the palace a young woman now worked, not knowing her parents, but that mattered not when it came to her duty as scribe in the Palace.
  And she blossomed and gave birth to a son, who took her last name. And the family remained in loyal servitude.
  Then came the Siege and the family endured.
  The family saw how the Emperor was interred on the Golden Throne and the line was continued.
  Strong men and women of dark brown hair and blue eyes through the centuries and through even millenia.
  Their house grand. Its offspring in unyielding service to the Imperium.
  The line was a strong one.
  Men and women entered active servitude in or around the palace or its Ordos.
  Bound to Terra. Which turned into Holy Terra.

  Quick Description

  
  Clad in white Power Armour and the blue robes which her Order's name came from, this (seemingly) young woman looks untouched by war, despite being armed with a Power Sword and an Inferno Pistol and her helmet marking her as a Celestian. Like her fellow Sisters she had the Fluer-de-Lys tattooed just under her left eye on her fair, light skin. Unlike the stereotype imagery of those of the Adepta Sororitas, she wore her dark brown hair in a ponytail, even if this meant discomfort in her helmet, though those icy blue eyes would rather show determination than discomfort. Even her armour looked untouched by war and only bore one Purity Seal on the left collar bone, its parchment thick and long, filled with zealous texts devoted to the God-Emperor of Mankind.
  

  
  
  

  The Encounter

  
  She stepped out of the shower. The chrono displayed she had merely half an hour before the Novice would come to help her into her armour. Not that it wasn't enough time, but she liked to take her time. She had come to appreciate every second she lived. She ran her fingers over her scar, following the towel as it dried her skin. Distinctly did she remember those teeth take a bite out of her. This was a scar she constantly refused to be treated when it was time for a rejuvination treatment. One of the perks of living on Holy Terra, rejuvination treatments for those that have proven themselves apt in their service to the God-Emperor.
  Minutes ticked away as she had dried herself off and contemplated her life in her service to Him. Again her fingers moved over the scar. The fact that she lived was a blessing on itself, even more so when taking into consideration that a chainaxe armed with the teeth of a Mica Dragon could have inflicted so much more damage.
  She put on some clothing, nothing too fancy as it wouldn't show from under her armour anyway. She prayed in silence. Ever since her encounter she took some more time for her prayers. When in the presence of fellow Sisters she would sing in prayer with them like usual, but she would always find a moment for silent prayer. A thanks to the God-Emperor for protecting His daughter against such a foe.
  As if perfectly timed when she finished praying, a knock on the door. Her Novice, Sister Keeda, stepped in. "Sister Sarrin. Am I too early?". Sarrin shook her head "No. Exactly on time. How did firing drills go for you last night?". Sarrin already knew the answer. Keeda was a good shot. An exceptional good shot for a Novice. "A nine out of ten on 100m. They are considering me for active duty.".
  Keeda stood at the ready to help Sarrin into her power armour, already softly reciting the proper incantations to please the machine spirit. The pristine white armour having only one blemish, like it's owner, barely covered by a lone purity seal. Sarrin stood ready to have her Novice seal her up in her armour. Once it was time for the helmet she ran her armoured fingers over the place where those Mica Dragon teeth had effortlessly torn through plasteel and ceramite. Her mind began to wander, she wouldn't even register Keeda asking if she was ready to put her helmet on, but she wasn't disrupted from her little mental recollecting either. Keeda knew better than to make the same mistake twice.
  Sarrin clacked her tongue inside her mouth once as her fingers found the tiny chink under the parchment where the old armour and it's repair could be distinguished from one another.
  
  Oh how she remembered...
  
  Her squad had been deployed along an Inquisition taskforce and a squad of Ultramarines in the Ultima Sector. Investigating a sudden psychic activity from one of the planets that had been deemed inhabitable and closed off to any Imperial Organisation without permission from Holy Terra.
  Records had shown the planet once was a great jewel in the crown that was Roboute Guiliman's micro empire. Armatura.
  The planet had been glassed and never again set foot upon by anyone, yet despite that there was an Astropathic whisper originating from it's vicinity.
  They'd spent a full two months scouring the planet to no avail after exitting the warp before another whisper was heard fairly close, three days away.
  The planet they arrived on next was nothing but a barren, desolate rock. No records were known about this planet.
  After a week they came across ruins of some sort. After further investigation they discovered the ruins belonged to something of human origins. Ominous winds began to blow and sand and dust were slowly shifting to reveal more and more ruins. It was then that they discovered they were not alone.
  The shifting sands had uncovered a huge aquilla attached to something. It attracted the attention of the inquisitor that spearheaded the operation. Curiosity killed the cat and in this case the cat was the inquisitor.
  They came out of nowhere...
  Clad in crimson power armour, lavishly decorated with religious texts on one side, six of them. Astartes of what used to be the XVII Legion. Word Bearers.
  Heretics. Sarrin wanted to enter open conflict despite the sandstorm that was slowly building. But the curious inquisitor demonstrated it was better to stay hidden, by having his head blown off by a psychic bolt.
  They had been compromised, their presence known to the enemy.
  Though this wasn't the worst about it all. She had faced psykers, heretics and even Traitor Astartes.
  She couldn't have fathomed what would follow.
  Clad in colours very similar to those of the Blood Angels, eight more Astartes rounded the hill... Well... The hill was slowly blowing away and revealing itself as yet another structure. As the sun shone more brightly on their armour it was revealed that these were not the noble sons of Sanguinius, but the deadly sons of Angron.
  Hatred for the enemy gripped the Ultramarines, the inquisitors acolytes and Sarrin and her fellow sisters, despite knowing full well what it meant to fight a Khornate Berzerker, especially those with heraldy of the Traitor XII Legion.
  The sandstorm whipped into life and the screams of dying acolytes could already be heard. The Astartes of the XIII rushed to face the fearsome berzekers while the Sisters, shielded by their faith engaged in combat with the heretical Word Bearers.
  Sarrin instructed her sisters to take a better vantage point in the shadow of the Emperor's aquilla, knowing better than to charge the Word Bearers. Their flamers en melta's wouldn't be able to function properly in a sandstorm anyway and going toe to toe with an Astartes would be almost heretically stupid, no matter how strong one's faith.
  Fate is a cruel mistress, even more so on that day. Vision was something that could only be dreamed off. They all had to aim their bolters in the vague direction where the systems in their helmets pointed them at.
  No one had seen it happen, no one saw him coming.
  One by one the Word Bearers fell. One Word Bearer fell, but took with him a Sister. They did not die in vain, they had removed His enemies, those who had betrayed Him. Contact was lost in the heat of battle. Silence on the Ultramarines channel. But they did not hear the roar of battle either, nor the roar of thirsty chainaxes. Had they won and had the sand merely disgruntled the machine spirits that kept the comm-links working? Well there were no more enemies on the targetting displays any more... Untill one Sister screamed in agony as her life was cut short by a chainaxe. The sandstorm began to die down and it was clear who their foe was.
  'God-Emperor thank you for giving me the strength to endure so I may avenge my sisters.' she thought as the memory became even more clear. She could smell the blood on him. Her sisters roaring in defiance as they turned to face the only man left standing. The inquisitor, his acolytes, the mighty Ultramarines, the tracherous Word Bearers and the World Eaters save one... Him... One arm bare, wrapped only in chains that bound his weapon to him. His faceplate an eternal snarl and his movements deadly.
  One sister was so shaken by fear that she did not even put up the effort to fight back, the whine of that infamous chainaxe grinding through armour and flesh, the smell of mangled bowels that followed. Two sisters moved to flank him while a third went at him with an Eviscerator. Sarrin had heard the stories of chainaxes being capable of slicing through multiple opponents, but she never thought she would loose three sisters in one fell sweep, their young lives cut short, their sould to be taken in the God-Emperors embrace.
  Her Superior was an excellent fencer. She held out a bit longer against the Astartes that had come from the same planet as they did. But even she met her end. What could Sarrin do? Her pistol was empty, the holy promethium already having been used up in a futile attempt to blow a hole into the ruins for shelter inside rather than in the shadow of it.
  He gunned the trigger to unclog his axe from the gore that was her Superior. The sandstorm died completely and she fought the urge to back off. She unclasped her helmet and dropped it into the sand, bringing her power sword's hilt to her chest to salute him. "If I am about to die, then at least with some dignity." she said, trying not to show fear as a breeze blew some of her deep brown hair in front of her face for a moment.
  He came to a stop, his muscles relaxing for a moment. Despite the tales of this monster of a man being mindless he displayed a certain sharpness of senses and sensibility. He brough the pommel of his axe to his chestplate to mimic her movement. His voice chilled her to the bone "If you hold out longer than the rest you will have just that. Tell me. Are you going to beg the Emperor to protect you too?".
  He mocked her faith and she clacked her tongue internally. She was going to die either way and she just said she wanted to do so with dignity. Indulging her enemy in a sick pleasure of being right would only make it less dignified of her. She remained silent and flicked her sword on, the power source humming as the field of energy envelopped the blade.
  In return he gunned the trigger on his axe. Gorechild whined, hungry. She charged, gripping her sword in two hands, she was going to need it against this infamous foe. She came in, aiming for the weapon rather than the body.
  Khârn had not expected this initially, but the ten thousand year old Astartes wasn't infamous for nothing. Forgoing to shoot with his plasma pistol, he brought his wrist under hers to redirect her weaponn. The energy field cut through one of the idols hanging from his helmet and with her swing going wide he had all the opportunity to let his axe sink into her back, but he didn't.
  The knee that rammed into her chest, despite her armour, knocked all the air out of her lungs and she staggered backwards. She held her sword pointed towards him, knowing that a power weapon would severly damage a conventional weapon at any time and she anticipated her opponent having this knowledge too. Khârn was fast though. There was no way an unaugmented human could ever truly compete with an Astartes, no matter how well trained.
  He got her in the shoulder with an armoured elbow and her grip on her sword wavered. Her left arm felt numb as if every bone had shattered. Now being forced to hold her sword in one hand she took a fencing stance. He came in with a chop, her sword moved to catch that axe from splitting her from shoulder to hip, but with that she hadn't counted on her knee being kicked to the side, causing her stance to falter.
  With a whine Gorechild effortlessly bit through armour and dug into flesh, but the power sword must have gotten a lucky hit as Khârn involuntarily pulled his arm back. Perhaps she had hit a nerve? Either way she dropped her weapon and it deactivated as it hit the ground. Unarmed she cluthed the wound and looked up to him, waiting, almost welcoming, for the blow that would send her into His eternal embrace.
  She clacked her tongue and spoke "Guess that's it then.". Khârn looked at her. He didn't go in for the kill. Did the Nails malfunction? Did the Emperor manage to enter his broken mind and bannish Khorne's wrathful screams from the Terran born World Eater? Either way he had paused and stared at her.
  She started back and even more so in disbelief as Khârn turned away and moved elsewhere as if having found something. She didn't move, silently thanking the Emperor for protecting her untill night fell and she found the courage to gather up the dead and call for help.
  She would spend a month alone, burying the corpses of the fallen in the shadow of the aquilla on top of the ruined structure.
  She had lived to tell the tale how she survived an encounter with Khârn. Not that she told anyone. She kept it to herself. Even when she was allowed to walk up to the Golden Throne and gaze upon Him, stand in His presence, His judgement, she kept it to herself, thanking Him in silence for keeping her that day.
  
  She let out a sigh as she moved her fingers away from the spot and looked to Keeda with a simple nod, letting her Novice put her helmet on for her. "I do hope that this year they will finally assign you to active duty." Sarrin said before taking her first steps as the systems in her helmet came to life. Tomorrow would be time to go to the Imperial Palace again. She got the privilege of going there once every twenty years...
